It is actually so exhaustive in its coverage that it will indeed help the bluewater sailor to learn how cross any ocean in the world. The main intent of this book is to prepare the North American sailor for his first crossing of the Atlantic to Europe. Covering prevailing winds and other seasonal considerations, the author not only deals with suitable starting points on the East coast but also covers in great detail the best and most popular destination sites in Europe. Several appendices provide additional useful information.

"Some good stuff but it could have been a thinner book" according to J. Vallely. I've re-read this book and changed my opinion about it for the better, so I decided to edit my earlier not-so-positive review. There is some good info in this book about crossing the Atlantic and arriving at different destinations.There's also a fair amount of chatty, tangiential small talk. In parts of the book, I found myself skimming paragraph after paragraph looking for a substantive point. The auther touches superficially on miscelaneous cruising and sailing subjects that are treated far better in many other well-known general books on cruising.However, there is some decent detail on what to expect on various Atlantic cruising routes. S
