This book teaches Unix fundamentals: commands, best practices, and a bit of history.If you're familiar with Unix, you can read the chapters in whichever order you prefer; otherwise, read the chapters in sequential order as the commands, lessons, and techniques build upon one another.To Taylor's credit, he teaches Unix while lowering its 'intimidation. Wonderful Reference! This book is great! I especialy enjoyed the section on vi. An extreemly helpful book, even though I've been using unix for almost 10 years, I learned some new tricks. Taylor gives it the old college try in this weighty book, which if nothing else will improve the strength of your wrists and forearms in seven days. Each chapter explains the goals, summarizes your efforts, and quizzes you at the end (answers are provided at the back of the book). Perhaps less information and a different physical format with kinder font choices would have produced a winner. . The massive amount of information provided in each educational unit is well organized, but the text, comments, and commands are nearly unreadable for tired eyes.
