DESCRIPTION:
The book aims to offer a dramatic account of how the "Glasnost" boat managed to complete the toughest ocean race in the world.. This is the extraordinary story of Fazisi, a Russian boat of revolutionary design entered in the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race. The American author tells how he became involved with the Fazisi, how his Russian co-skipper mysteriously committed suicide, how the boat was almost lost in a storm in the Southern Ocean and how, having arrived safely at Freemantle, Novak and his crew were told that Pepsi had withdrawn their sponsorship because of bad press in the USA
Must read for russian sailors It's a shame this story is little known in Russia. Not an easy reading, that's for sure - but not an easy story too, happened in a very difficult time. Just the fact that against all odds they made it all the way to the finish deserves deepest respect. These people were driven by the same kind of spirit as described in "A World of My Own" by Robin Knox-Johnston - which seems to almost disappear in modern sailing.. Good sailor's tale The story of Russia's first Whitbread entry is interesting, and well told from Novak's perspective. Much better that the same story as told in Race To Freedom.
