Kudos to Princeton and van Perlo for creating a field guide to yet another part of our amazing planet."--Dan Kunkle, Wildlife Activist. It is a good reference for a large area of islands and for world birding provides a great tool for finding endemics for specific island groups."--birdfreak"The small book size, informative maps, detailed endemic information, and broad geographic area makes this the best source of info for this area as a whole. You really should pick up a copy of this book if you plan to bird the islands, plain and simple."--Cory Gregory's Birding Blog"Van Perlo's excellent paintings illustrate 750 species, and the helpful text features 19 maps of the various Pacific archipelagos, plus websites, lists of pertinent organizations and birds restricted to each of these areas (endemics), and a glossary. "
Certainly the right choice for a multi-location vacation, but not a good choice if you're only going to one of the places Renee G. I bough this book for a long vacation where only part of the time was on New Zealand and part in Hawaii. Bottom line: having a condensed and combined book was useful. For that purpose, and that purpose only, the book was 4 stars. If I were doing NZ or Hawaii as my sole trip and was serious about birding, I would definitely research and buy a s. adequate as a field guide This book fills a definite need, the only guide which is useful to a traveler visiting New Zealand with stop-overs in Fiji and Rarotonga, or visits to any of the Pacific Islands. The range maps are small but readable, the text description is minimal. A disappointment is the small size of the illustrations, cramming most birds into the space of. "Great book." according to Sandy. Wish birds were broken up by location, though. I'd identify a bird I thought I had seen on Hawaii only to read that it was only found in New Zealand. Not user friendly for a person unfamiliar with the area.
