DESCRIPTION:
This amazing compilation covers 26 years (1980–2005) in the artistic life of Thomas Karsten. Featuring a handful of models repeatedly—mostly women with a few couples and families—the study allows observations of how the artist's models and methods change over time. Everything about these photographs is dynamic: the point of view, the shapes of the models' bodies, and even the evolving way the subjects move and stand while they are being photographed. Arranged in chronological order, these portraits can be read like a novel, giving the passage of time
wiredweird said Gorgeous retrospective. Karsten is far and away my favorite figure photographer. His work in recent years focuses on female beauty and on tasteful eroticism. So, of course, I found myself curious about his earlier work and about his progress as an artist. This book does a great job at showing those. The real story is in the images themselves, apart from Karsten's history, and in the models that appear in the photos. As with all of Karsten's work, I find myself most attracted to simple figure studies. Ute catches my eye, for example - a slim figure, a direct gaze from the model, and a plain background. Perhaps she's not someone I'd notice if she walked by on. David Jimenez said Interesting opportunity. Unlike the previous reviewer, Karsten is a photographer whose work I know just tangentially. Even so, it is a rare opportunity to be able to appreciate the evolution of a photographer's work through pretty much a quarter of a century, how his talent went from raw to refined. If I have to be honest, I wasn't particularly impressed with the portion of this book related with his work during the 80s, and if that had been the whole book, I would probably rate it at least a star lower, but it gives some understanding of his style. Some shots are marvelous, most are really good, a few are just average, but all and all this is a good acquisit
